A black countertop is the fastest way to make a kitchen look expensive.

The contrast against a white or pale cabinet is immediate, and a black island under pendant lighting is the single most photographed thing we install.

We will also be straight with you: black shows more than any other colour. Dust, water spots, crumbs, the pale film left by a hard-water cloth. If nobody in the house will wipe it down daily, choose a mid-grey and be happier.

What to put it under

Where it works best: on an island rather than everywhere, and in a room with good light. Black eats light — in a north-facing kitchen with one small window, think carefully. Best under white shaker in Choice Signature for maximum contrast.

In porcelain

The darker porcelains are Apollo, Ararat Lightning, Black Swan, Laurent Golden, Marmo Bruno Perla, Nero Collemandina and Nero Marquina.
